ChArctic: From Hackathon to Production

Abstract of the talk: ChArctic provides the public an interactive view into the changing Arctic sea ice extent. It was initially developed during a one day 'hack-a-thon' at NSIDC and quickly evolved into a publicly facing app and one of the top pages on the NSIDC website. This talk will give a brief overview of the science behind the ChArctic data and images and cover some of the software development aspects of the project. Technologies covered in the talk will include JavaScript, Highcharts JS, and Ruby on Rails.

Speaker Description: 

Kevin is a software developer at the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC). His background includes software development in C++, Java, and Ruby, and is currently focused on science development at NSIDC, using Python whenever he can.
